As with any band on the rise getting thrust into the public eye can have its positives and negatives. Unfortunately one of those negatives that seem all too commonplace in this current internet age with social media is the misogynistic comments directed towards female musicians. CHVRCHES’ front woman Lauren Mayberry is certainly no stranger to these trolls and has spoken out several times about this social issue.
Mayberry first spoke out when she penned an op-ed for The Guardian in 2013 detailing the misogynistic abuse she was receiving via the bands social media channels. Earlier this year she posted yet another vulgar example on her Instagram page of the abuse she continues to receive. After the release of her bands latest music video for the single “Leave A Trace” last week the trolls from the 4chan community were in full effect calling Mayberry a slut and more with a forum full of disgusting comments. Mayberry acknowledged this attack after being asked to join the discussion and posted on her social pages, “Dear anyone who thinks misogyny isn't real. It is and this is what it looks like.”
After this latest episode Mayberry spoke with Cathy Newman of Channel 4 News to discuss her viewpoints on internet trolls stating, “I don't think the ‘just ignore it and it will blow away’ argument is working.” She felt it was important to speak out saying, “This happens to women all the time anyway, and I hate the idea that young girls who follow our band deal with stuff like that. I don’t want them to feel isolated; I don’t want them to feel like it is just happening to them, because it happens everywhere.” Watch the interview below:
In case you missed it last week check out the latest TYCI radio show on Subcity Radio. Early into CHVRCHES live set at Pukkelpop Festival in Hasselt, Belgium this past Friday the band were the victims of some technical difficulties which unfortunately ended their day early. Absolutely gutted they saved the day in a heartwarming way. While most musicians would pack it in and call it day, a visibly shaken Lauren Mayberry performed an abbreviated yet stirring a cappella rendition of their hit song “The Mother We Share” with the help of a supportive crowd. This took an enormous amount of courage and sure everyone including band mates Iain Cook and Martin Doherty were singing right along with Mayberry.
Although saddened by the short set many fans took to social media to express their gratitude and support for the band. One fan traveling all the way from Barcelona to meet with friends to see CHVRCHES even got the ultimate surprise, an impromptu meet and greet with the band made possible by their amazing tour manager Cara McDaniel.
The amount of time CHVRCHES spend with their fans is something we bring up quite often as one of many reasons why we love this band so much. Their generosity and humbleness truly inspire. Thank you Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty for everything you do.

Earlier today CHVRCHES unveiled the official video for “Leave A Trace” from their upcoming sophomore album Every Open Eye due out September 25th!
The first single off the new album was described by Lauren Mayberry as “the nastiest, snidest tune” on the record. She recently told Pitchfork, “‘Leave A Trace’ is the middle finger mic-drop. It’s about that point where you’re like, there’s no point having this conversation anyways: There will be no resolve, I won’t feel better about it, you won’t feel better about it, no outcome from this will actually change my reality. It makes me feel better to write about that — I’ve done something constructive with it. You don’t put that on other people, you put that into what you do. That’s always the way I’ve written lyrics. My ex-partners are not friends with me, but I’m OK with that.” This atmospherically dark video and matching lyrics contrast beautifully with Mayberry’s voice and the pounding synths coming from band mates Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. With CHVRCHES’ highly anticipated sophomore album Every Open Eye due out next month the band provided an in depth interview with Matt Fink that really captures the ethos of this band along with some excellent photos from Pal Hansen for the cover story of the August/September 2015 issue of Under the Radar magazine.
Fresh off the completion of recording Every Open Eye band members Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty took a few moments to reflect on the early days of the band including the misogyny Mayberry has been subjected to, the current state of music and the pressures of creating a follow up album to their smashing debut album The Bones of What You Believe in 2013. A few excerpts from this interview can be found directly below. "All we were doing is being a band with a woman in the front, and if that's something that upsets people that much, I think that's a startling look at society." - Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES "It's hard to truly understand pop these days, because it changes on a monthly basis. The Internet has changed everything." - Martin Doherty of CHVRCHES "I don't think we would have been accepted by an indie audience 15 years ago." - Iain Cook of CHVRCHES This issue is available now digitally via Under the Radar, on magazine apps Readbug, Readly and Zinio and will be hitting newsstands shortly. |
