Earlier today CHVRCHES announced they will be playing the inaugural Landmark Music Festival at Washington D.C.’s West Potomac Park this September.
The festival will take place over two days on September 26-27th featuring over 40 bands on five stages for one cause. This musical celebration will kick off a national campaign to bring awareness and raise funds to restore the National Mall. Tickets are on sale now via the festival's website but will start to increase in price tomorrow morning at 10AM EST. For those not able to attend you will be able to stream the festival via the Live Nation channel on Yahoo! Screen.
CHVRCHES front woman Lauren Mayberry has faced her share of online misogyny and harassment before as witnessed by her moving 2013 op-ed for The Guardian. In this day and age anyone with an internet connection can post such derogatory comments towards others. Whether these internet trolls are just looking for attention or truly intent on harming others it’s sickening and uncalled for. Anyone and everyone can be subjected to this but unfortunately females and especially women in the public eye and in male dominated industries like music take the brunt of this abuse. Earlier this week Mayberry was the target of yet another internet user with the disgusting comment below.
Acknowledging the comment, Mayberry defended herself with a forceful response. “My band is lucky enough to have some of the most awesome, supportive and respectful fans in the world and we are so excited to be in the studio making an album to share with them,” she stated. “Yet, on a daily basis, we still receive communications like this. These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable. But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear. I am not going anywhere. So bring it on, motherfuckers. Let’s see who blinks first.” Friends and fans worldwide sent messages of support to Mayberry via social media channels in the wake of this recent occurrence. Discussing this disturbing trend in our virtual society today helps bring awareness but we can only hope that more inspirational people like Lauren Mayberry will stand up against this ever growing issue. Let your voices be heard!
