In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lauren Mayberry shared the first public details about CHVRCHES’ third release coming in 2018. After self-producing their first two albums The Bones of What You Believe (2013) and Every Open Eye (2015) the band consisting of Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty have enlisted the talents of famed record producer Greg Kurstin who has worked with the likes of Adele, Beck, Foo Fighters, Kelly Clarkson and Pink. Sharing her experience of working with Kurstin, Mayberry said, "He pushed what we were doing to be bigger in some ways, but he also pushed us to be weirder. He’d be like, ‘If the vocal melodies are as sweet and as precise as this, why don’t we make these other sounds so f***ed up and gnarly and strange?’ I loved that.”
Lyrically the songwriting has changed for the new album as well, seeking a more outwardly approach instead of their past introspective work. Instead of writing the lyrics after a track was finished, this time Mayberry worked on writing in the moment to capture things more naturally.
A release date and album title have yet to be revealed but the group have recently said through social media channels that this is their best work yet and excited to share it with the world soon. Adding to her excitement, Mayberry said, “When I listen to the record, I feel like it’s the most pop stuff we’ve done and also the most aggressive and vulnerable at the same time. It was about really leaning into those moments — and also wanting there to be a real humanity and character to what we’re saying.”
