CHVRCHES’ lead singer Lauren Mayberry voiced her concerns today about gun control in the US with a short video posted on Twitter in wake of the mass shooting yesterday in Sutherland Springs, Texas which left 26 dead and many more injured. As a child, Mayberry grew up in the town of Dunblane, Scotland which suffered the deadliest mass shooting in British history and ultimately led to stricter gun control laws within the country. Mayberry, who now lives in America, reflected on this memory and the resulting actions taken by the British, has called upon U.S. politicians to take action on gun control and mental healthcare funding. She stated, "prayers are not what stopped more atrocities like Dunblane happening in the UK, gun control did." Watch the video below.
Earlier today Entertainment Weekly premiered CHVRCHES’ cover song of Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off” for the upcoming album The Con X: Covers which is due out October 20th. Much longer than the original, this ambient interpretation will have you feeling like you’re floating in the clouds above. Give it a listen and let us know what you think in the comments below.
“Lauren [Mayberry of CHVRCHES] was one of the first artists we approached for The Con X: Covers project,” Tegan Quin told EW of the track. “We are massive fans of CHVRCHES and the music they make. Lauren is an ally to the LGBTQ community and has been outspoken and political, so she fit the ethos of the project perfectly. CHVRCHES are in the studio making a new record, so we were touched they made the time to cover ‘Call It Off.’”

Yesterday MTV News revealed that CHVRCHES would be making appearances in the upcoming Archie Comics’ series The Archies. Coming this October, the gang from Riverdale including Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Reggie will hit the road as a touring band following their musical dreams as a band called The Archies. Written by Alex Segura and Matt Rosenberg with art by Joe Eisma.
During their adventures on the road they will meet with other real-life bands, the very first being CHVRCHES who will make a cameo towards the end of issue #2 and then become mentors to The Archies in issue #3. Betty and Veronica will encounter some real-life experiences very similar to those faced by CHVRCHES’ lead singer Lauren Mayberry. Below is an excerpt that can be read in full from MTV News.
"Lauren handles everything from hecklers at the shows to the way the press portrays her with such grace and such skill and is still a badass front woman who is always putting the focus on the music and on her band," co-writer Matt Rosenberg said.
The Archies #1 hits comic book stores on October 4th with issue #2 due out on November 8th. Watch the official announcement of CHVRCHES’ appearance in the video below.

CHVRCHES just shared a beautiful new version of their Every Open Eye track “Down Side of Me” this morning. This stripped-down version will be part of the 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood project benefiting the charity Planned Parenthood. The track also includes a new music video directed by actress Kristen Stewart.
In a press release, Lauren Mayberry said, “‘Down Side of Me’ was not written specifically for this project but I really like how the lyrics can be interpreted in a way that supports the goal of the project as a whole. We should all be able to have faith that our governments are working in our best interests—and if they aren’t then, they should be challenged and held to account. ‘I’ll believe that you’re all that you said you would be.’”
“We have always tried to be socially aware and to link in with organizations whose work we support. Planned Parenthood is an incredibly important resource for so many women (and men) in America and the fact that Planned Parenthood has come under so much fire in the current political climate does not sit well with us. Now is not the time to stay quiet, and if artists want to help by raising money or awareness for causes that we believe in, then I think that they should.”
Watch the stirring video below.
“Down Side of Me” is available now digitally from iTunes and Spotify. Click here to pre-order the 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood vinyl box set. Planned Parenthood will receive 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the box set and streaming listens.
