CHVRCHES started out working from a rented basement flat at Alucard Studios in Glasgow with three synths, the Moog Voyager, the Prophet 08 and a Juno 106 along with some minimalist computer software and a basic vocal setup to self produce and record their highly successful 2013 debut album The Bones of What You Believe. Plenty of things have changed for Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty in just a few short years and Sound on Sound magazine (October 2015) was there to learn about the production process of their highly anticipated sophomore album Every Open Eye.
Returning to the same studio space for Every Open Eye the band had the comforts of home, time to work on the new album at their own pace and invest in a whole new arsenal of electronic equipment for album number two. Expanding into two rooms with engineer David Simpson who worked on the technical aspects of the album the band left off right where they started, making beautiful music. While the Cook and Doherty would work on beats, parts of the songs and production in one room, Mayberry had the essential space in the other room to work on vocals all of which helped bring this album together so quickly. A really interesting read about capturing imperfect beats, creating more with less and the new equipment they use. With CHVRCHES’ highly anticipated sophomore album Every Open Eye due out next month the band provided an in depth interview with Matt Fink that really captures the ethos of this band along with some excellent photos from Pal Hansen for the cover story of the August/September 2015 issue of Under the Radar magazine.
Fresh off the completion of recording Every Open Eye band members Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty took a few moments to reflect on the early days of the band including the misogyny Mayberry has been subjected to, the current state of music and the pressures of creating a follow up album to their smashing debut album The Bones of What You Believe in 2013. A few excerpts from this interview can be found directly below. "All we were doing is being a band with a woman in the front, and if that's something that upsets people that much, I think that's a startling look at society." - Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES "It's hard to truly understand pop these days, because it changes on a monthly basis. The Internet has changed everything." - Martin Doherty of CHVRCHES "I don't think we would have been accepted by an indie audience 15 years ago." - Iain Cook of CHVRCHES This issue is available now digitally via Under the Radar, on magazine apps Readbug, Readly and Zinio and will be hitting newsstands shortly. |
